Chapter Nine
âIâm going to miss you so much, Little Man. Make sure youâre good for Mother Jones. No crying, okay?â
Instead of waiting on a response, Grace peppered DJâs face with kisses until he squealed like a pig.
âAwe. DJ is a good baby. Weâll be just fine. Donât you worry, Grace. Heâs in good hands,â Mother Jones said.
âI have no doubt that heâs in good hands. I just know that he can get a little finicky at times, and weâll be gone for a few hours. Please give us a call if he becomes too much, and weâll come back home.â
âThat wonât be necessary, Grace. Iâm a baby whisperer. Plus, you have another one on the way. You and Damian need to take as much time to yourselves as you still can.â
âHow do you know Iâm pregnant? Did Damian say something?â
âNo. I ran into your mother at the gas station, and we got to talking.â
âWhat did she tell you?â Grace pressed. No one had heard from her in almost a week, and despite their issues, Grace was worried about her motherâs well-being. Her father was beside himself with worry and considered canceling the churchâs annual menâs retreat. After an hour of back and forth, Damian convinced her father to stick to the original plan. Damian insisted the spiritual trip was just what her father needed.
âShe saidââ
âGrace, have you said your final goodbyes to DJ? We need to leave now if weâre going to make our reservation,â Damian called out as he rushed down the stairs. âThank you, Mother Jones, for babysitting DJ. Grace made you dinner. Please help yourself. You have our phone numbers. Please behave, DJ,â Damian said before tugging Grace out of the house. He opened the car door for her as he customarily did, took her hand, kissed the back of it, and lowered her into her seat. Damian had barely started the engine when he felt his wife tugging on his sleeve.
âD, I spoke with Mother Jones, and she told me that she ran into my mother at the gas station the other day.â
âWhat was she doing? Panhandling?â he joked, earning a swat from his beloved wife. That swat wasnât enough to keep him from laughing his ass off. Nothing would make him happier than seeing his highfaluting mother-in-law fall on hard times. Death would permanently get her out of his hair, but heâd take what he could get.
âYou never take anything seriously,â Grace commented as she tried to choke back her laughter. Damian didnât laugh often, but when he did, it was infectious.
âYou want me to be serious? Fine. Iâll be serious. I donât want to hear about your mother for 24 hours. For the next 24 hours, I want to pretend that First Lady Loretta Ennis does not exist. We are going on a date for the first time in a very long time. We should take this time to focus on ourselves. I hate to say it, Grace, but donât even think about the kidsâjust you and me.
